Columbia College


Columbia College (Columbia College of Missouri or CCM) is a private co-educational liberal arts university based in Columbia, Missouri. On its Columbia Campus, the school offers many day and evening classes, while it offers extension courses through its nationwide campuses and ties with U.S. military bases (even those in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) and online courses.

Since its inception (1851), the College has retained a covenant with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), even though The College is nonsectarian.

Columbia College was the first women's college west of the Mississippi River that was chartered by a state legislature. The college was also originally founded as Christian Female College. Today it has a very diverse student body.

This institution offers its students over 55 fields of study. They range from Accounting, Arts, Criminology and Computer Science, to Geography, Music, International Business and Sociology. All of the programs offer the same high standards of excellence in teaching and learning. Also, many of the academic programs include an internship or practicum. This allows the students to obtain practical experience in addition to the more theoretical classroom instruction.

Students are also able to choose from 23 different online college degree programs. An accredited online college degree can be earned through the online education programs, very fast. More than 12,000 students take online college classes at Columbia College every year. The online studies are accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association.

Adult education and military education are the fields that Columbia College specializes in. They offer top military education and adult continuing education opportunities at 35 campuses nationwide. Some special programs, like the Financial Aid programs are also available for qualifying students.

The Career Center offers students and alumni a wide range of services, resources and programs. They are carefully designed to prepare them to successfully achieve their personal and career objectives.

The Writing Center provides free individual assistance to students that are working on papers which are assigned in any course that is taught on the home campus. And Tutoring Across the Curriculum offers free assistance on a walk-in basis for a variety of classes.

The Mathematics Center offers academic tutoring services for students enrolled in a 100- or 200-level math course. These services are provided free of charge, however are only available to students enrolled for credit in a course at the Columbia College home campus.

The computer help desk offers the campus computer and network use support, while the computer lab offers access to computers and similar technology to individual students.

The library's collection of materials has over 80,000 items, including books, videos and CDs. Students are also able to access the library databases through its multiple online databases.

The Student Support Services office works to ensure the success of students at risk. It provides tutoring assistance, workshops, career and graduate school site visits and personal and financial counseling to the students.

Columbia College encourages its students to participate in the college’s clubs and organizations. Students are even allowed to form their own organizations. Columbia College offers approximately 40 clubs and organizations to its students.

The college also provides its students with athletic and recreational opportunities, through its student center, fitness center, gymnasium, softball field, soccer field and tennis and volleyball courts. Columbia College is a member of the NAIA Division I and the American Midwest Conference.
